Antiseptic and anti-inflammatory
Buchu is a small evergreen shrub, belonging to the Rutaceae family. It is native to South Africa.
The oil is extracted by steam distillation from its small, 1cm-long leaves. This shrub can grow up to 6 ft high and bears small white, star-like flowers. The oil is dark yellow to brown in colour and has a strong blackcurrant and minty odour.
Buchu has been used as antiseptic and anti-inflammatory oil by aromatherapists, and is known as a traditional insect repellent due to its sharp scent.
